Newly Admitted Students Checklist
The contents of this checklist are items that pertain to all graduate students. International students have a unique set of considerations including securing a student visa and attending a mandatory orientation for international students. Each student should check with their individual academic unit to determine if there are other items essential to getting started in their academic program.
- Review the Academic Calendar. The academic calendar coordinates administrative activities for the University. Individual schools and divisions may vary the start date of their academic programs. Students should check with their academic unit about when to arrive on campus in preparation for orientation and the first day of classes.
- Get immunizations. The State of Illinois code requires students to provide proof of immunity to Measles (Rubeola), mumps, Rubella (German Measles), and Tetanus/ Diphtheria. A liscensed healthcare provider must complete the Student Care Center’s Immunization Record Form (medical students have additional requirements). Immunizations can be obtained at the Student Care Center for a fee.
- Pay Tuition and Fees. Tuition is due approximately two weeks before the start of the quarter. In addition to tuition, be prepared to pay a mandatory student life fee which covers student activities, access to the Student Care Center and Student Counseling and Resource Service, and lifetime access to official transcripts. A fee for the Basic University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) also appears on all initial tuition bills. Students are required to pay an insurance fee unless U-SHIP has been waived by providing proof of appropriate medical insurance before the posted deadline. If necessary, the bill will be adjusted once an insurance selection has been made.
- Set up CNetID. The CNetID (Chicago Network Identifier) is the prefix to @uchicago.edu email addresses, and the user name for using a variety of University online services.
- Verify information in cMore. cMore is the online student information system. All University students use cMore to view and update their personal information including address, phone number, class schedule, student medical insurance, and other items on record in the Office of the University Registrar
- Select Health Insurance Plan. All students are required to carry appropriate medical insurance. Use your CNet ID to log in and confirm automatic enrollment in the Basic Univeristy Health Insurance Plan, upgrade to the Prescription Advantage Plan, apply for an enrollment waiver, or purchase coverage for dependents.
- Attend Graduate Student Orientation. In addition to the orientations offered by individual schools and programs, the Office of Graduate Affairs hosts an orientation for all graduate students. Representatives from 25+ campus offices that provide essential student services- from transportation, to support for religious life, to healthcare- are on hand to answer questions.
- Pick up Chicago Card. The Chicago Card is the official University identification card. Students use it for many things, including getting access to University libraries and athletics facilities, checking out library materials, and riding certain CTA buses. Chicago Cards can be obtained at the Identification & Privileges Office in the lobby of the Regenstein Library.
