Safety in the City
Welcome to Chicago: a fascinating and exciting metropolis with more opportunities for recreation, entertainment, and learning than you can imagine! This city of nearly three million people is disctinctive and diverse, but it also presents the challenges of a complex, modern, urban society.
To help keep the campus and its immediate community safe, the University of Chicago employs the largest private police force in the country. You’ll also find more than 325 emergency phones on and off campus, and opportunities to learn some “street smarts” from our Community Police Officer. The University of Chicago Police Department offers a variety of services to improve your safety wherever you travel in the vicinity of campus or beyond.
Common Sense
The University’s Common Sense guide offers advice, safety tips, and University resources that can help you navigate safely around the big city. You will also find details on where to go for help in the event of an emergency and how to avoid threatening situations.
Citizen/Police Cooperation
Using your street smarts is an important way to join the partnership between citizens and police. Together we can keep our neighborhood and our city safe to explore to the fullest.
The University’s Community Safety website offers crime statistics, information on the University’s private police force, and security alerts.
