Medical Care
Student Care Center and Student Counseling & Resource Service
The Student Care Center at the University of Chicago Medical Center provides on-campus medical care for students; the Student Counseling and Resource Service provides consultations and short-term counseling services for students. Students enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan (see below) are required to obtain their primary care services at SCC and SCRS while residing in Chicago.
Health Insurance
The University requires that students carry medical insurance to ensure that they have appropriate medical coverage for treatments that cannot be provided at SCC and SCRS. Each year, students are automatically enrolled in the University Student Health Insurance Plan. Students who provide proof that they are insured by a policy that offers comparable benefits have the option of waiving out of U-SHIP. Students who do not waive U-SHIP by the published deadline will remain enrolled in the U-SHIP Basic level of coverage. Students may purchase U-SHIP Basic coverage for their dependents. The U-SHIP coverage dates are September 1 to August 31.
Health and Wellness Fee
A mandatory Health and Wellness Fee is assessed each quarter to cover services provided at SCC and SCRS. Family members (e.g., spouse, domestic partner, dependent child who is at least fourteen years old) who are covered by the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) will be assessed the Health and Wellness Fee and will obtain their primary care services at SCC and SCRS.
Immunization
The State of Illinois requires students to present proof of immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases. To comply with this law, entering students must demonstrate immunity to rubella (two vaccinations are required for German measles), mumps, measles (rubeola), and tetanus/diphtheria (the most recent booster must have been given within the last ten years). Students must demonstrate compliance with these regulations no later than the third Friday of the first quarter of attendance at the University; non-compliant students will be restricted from continued registration at the University. More information on immunization compliance can be found on the Student Care Center website.
Medical Care for Dependents
