Housing

Graduate housing

Numerous options are available for graduate student housing, from an on-campus resident hall to University-owned neighborhood apartments to privately owned apartments in walk-up buildings and high-rises throughout Hyde Park and the entire city of Chicago. Your choice of residence and location depend on your personal preferences; while some students enjoy the proximity to campus, intellectual stimulation, and family friendliness of Hyde Park, others prefer to commute and live closer to the nightlife of north side neighborhoods. Whatever your choice, Chicago has much to choose from.

University Housing

Neighborhood Student Apartments

The University of Chicago’s Real Estate Operations office is often the simplest choice for graduate students, particularly for those traveling long distances to Chicago who may not have the luxury of a thorough apartment search. The University owns and manages more than 1,300 apartments, ranging in size from efficiency to three bedrooms. Many are furnished. All buildings are near public playlots or parks, and several have fenced yards. All buildings are served by campus bus routes, and some have parking lots. Some are even pet-friendly!

International House

International House is home to graduate students and a select group of upper division undergraduates who qualify to be Collegiate Fellows. I-House residents are evenly divided between international students and U.S. citizens. All student sleeping rooms are singles; common bathrooms are located on each floor of the ten-story building. A common kitchen and dining room are also at students’ disposal. Yearly and quarterly contracts are available. Students in need of assistance in paying their housing expenses may apply for residential fellowships.

New Graduate Residence Hall

The only graduate dormitory at the University of Chicago, the New Graduate Residence Hall is located on the south side of the Midway Plaisance and features 122 recently furnished rooms, a front desk staffed 24/7, a fully equipped exercise room, and a large-screen television. There’s also a community kitchen with refrigerators, freezers with individual bins, stoves and microwave ovens. Wireless connectivity to the University is available in all residential and common study rooms.
